I’m expanding my exercise horizons. It’s not just Zumba anymore. And oh, am I SORE!!!! Every part of me aches. It hurts to turn my head. It hurts to walk, especially up and down stairs. It hurts to bend. To lift my arms. To sleep. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.
What I’m doing is TRX…
TRX stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise. It’s suspension training performed with a set of adjustable straps that is anchored to something sturdy above head level.
The TRX Suspension Trainer was developed by former US Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick, as he and his fellow SEALS searched for ways to stay in peak physical condition with limited access to training implements and/or space. Starting as parachute webbing, it has developed into a well-made, portable training system. It’s harness system allows you to use your own body weight for strength training. It allows for the explosive movement without stress upon landing. By adjusting body position, the level of difficulty of a particular exercise changes as well, making it appropriate for people at all fitness levels.
The benefits of TRX include:
- Builds truly functional strength
- Improves flexibility, balance and core stability all at once
- Allows for explosive movement without pounding
- Facilitates an enormous range of body weight training movements for the entire body
- Can be performed anywhere, anytime, by anybody

Here’s a video I found on YouTube…
This is not my class – we only have one row of straps… it’s a much smaller class. They make it look easy, but if you look closely you might see some of the people trembling. It is NOT easy, and I feel the effects for DAYS! Our class is an hour long and I really feel like it works many more muscles than if I was working with free weights or weight machines in the same amount of time. I was intimidated to try this at first. Like Zumba, it took me several months to give it a go. And I’ve only done it a few times, but I think I’ll stick with it a while. My husband even tried it with me!
So, exercise seems to be my new thing. I don’t dread it like I once did. I actually look forward to it and plan my week around it. Weird, right? This is the first time in my life I actually feel like I have time to exercise. And I’ve always wanted muscles. Could this be my new passion? My mid-life crisis? Menopause? No, probably not menopause. I’ve never heard of women exercising their way through menopause. Although that’s probably not a bad idea. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be ripped by the time I turn 50!
So, how does TRX sound to you?
